Letter Home from Elder Bryen North

Date:  August 25, 2014
Area:  Oxford, Mississippi
Companion:  Elder Cy Despain

Dear Director,

The general area is usually referred to as Ole Miss. We will be visiting the campus plenty in the time to come because school is starting back up again and a lot of people will be showing up. On the campus they have a spot called Fulton Chapel. A white building, looks like a chapel on the outside but on the inside is a theater. It's never locked and often empty, we like to hang out in there to feel the Air Conditioning and take phone calls while around there.
We ride the buses rather often. The public transportation here is pretty good. Costs a dollar per ride and you can get a transfer ticket sometimes to save you a dollar on the return trip, or if you need to switch buses to reach a certain part of town. None of the buses are double decker though.

The area is centered on Oxford and Ole Miss, but is an enormous area that is far from everybody else. It seems to be my fate to be far from the other areas. We go out to a place called Batesville, also Bruce, Banner, Water Valley and Paris.

We recently had dinner with the Jones, who have a Lego tower of Orthanc in their living room. (One of the Two Towers from Lord of the Rings, Saruman's Tower in Isengard)

We last night ate with the Griffith's, who have a son named Jaxon. He is two, but claims to be three, and is very cool. Thank you Grandma for your letters, and at the meeting I finally got an old letter from Karoline!

Letter Home from Elder North - August 18, 2014

Dear Paper Salesmen,

I got a letter from Grandma Mary a few days ago. Sad to hear about Robin Williams.

We will be finishing our bike week this week and we had a very interesting time a couple nights ago! We were walking around after an appointment pretty far from our apartment, thinking about calling someone to get us. We came upon an older gentleman fishing with his son and son's friend in a pond in the neighborhood. He invited us over to talk and to eat the fish with him after. We discussed gospel doctrine with him for the next thirty minutes then he took us home with him as the conversation continued. His name is Michael Folton and at the home was his wife Dene, three girls who I think one of was his daughter and the two boys that were fishing. He had a lot of questions, we didn't eat the fish then unfortunately, but Dene made fabulous burgers and mac'n'cheese. She got impatient with the gospel discussion holding up dinner! I showed some card tricks to the girls and after about an hour and a half he took us home. This was the first time on my mission something quite like this had happened, I had thought it was a myth. He was kind, interested and engaged in what we said and it was a great experience all around.

A found a Straw-Angel a while back, the story about it is recorded on the camera, though I wish I had had the camera with me at the time.

We should be getting the car back soon, and with it we want to go to Batesville and contact some other far-away referrals.

Elder Despain has a rat trap that he used on a lighter this morning. He didn't get the explosion he wanted though, just a loud puff.

Letter Home from Elder North - August 11, 2014

Dear Love at Home,

Whoa that's a lot of brithdays coming up. Happy Birthday all!

The baptism went extremely well. We had a good number of people in attendance, and one of our investigators. They did both move from North Carolina to Oxford so that Hannah could do some Schooling. They just live together, no one else is there. As for the baptism itself I caught myself on a slip up in the wording and started over, but other than that everything went off without a hitch.

Meetings with the Mission President are typically once very month to month and a half.

Best part about Oxford as opposed to my previous areas, would probably be the Ward Mission Leader. We didn't have a very involved one in West Memphis since he was busy and lived out of town. In Kennett we just didn't have one. Here we have a great one!
There are some decently cool buildings on campus, the Lyceum is one of the oldest buildings there.

We'll be on bike week, but the timing is pretty good. We hope to do some finding and setting of dates this week.

Letter from Elder North - August 8, 2014

Date:  August 4, 2014
Area:  Oxoford, Mississippi
Companion: Elder Cy Despain

Dear Spaniards,

Everything is going well with my new companion. He is 20, from Arizona and has learned almost everybody's name since he got here, and it hasn't even been a week yet. We have three dates set, two for the 23rd and one for this Saturday, having set it last Saturday. Elisha had been talking to missionaries in North Carolina for about a year now and her sister joined the church a few years ago, so now she's ready to take the plunge! Everybody pray for her as we prepare for her baptism.

We have a lot of great things going for us now and I'm very excited. Oxford is going to hit it's influx of people soon and we will have loads of new people to talk to!

I suppose the toughest thing was changing companions and I thought it was going to be hard taking over the area so soon, but we have been MAD busy the past few days! So no worries.

Our lesson with Elisha (Pronounced Uh-Leash-uh) was excellent, we had a member there with us, JP, and he helped immensely in talking with her and helping smooth her nerves. She's very much ready, just nervous about actually doing it it seems.

I got a letter from Grandma Maxine, thank you very much! Everybody remember to read and pray, the gospel of Jesus Christ is real and the Book of Mormon IS the Word of God, finding out is a simple prayer away.
